Scott and Jennifer both come from military backgrounds. He's Army, she's Navy. (Hence the name of the home.) She graduated from the Naval Academy, he graduated from Virginia Military Institute. (Yes, she's the smart one!)
In 2002 it looked like Scott was going to be sent to Bosnia so we blocked off time on the calendar to take a week of vacation somewhere in September. In August, the deployment was cancelled, so we, being frugal minded, decided not to go on vacation since there was now "no need."
Scott's parents, however, used their timeshare to exchange into Kitty Hawk during that same time period and invited us down. Well, we'd never really been beach people so the offer met some initial resistance. They persisted. We relented. And off to the beach we went with our baby son, Alexander.
We're always on the lookout for real estate investment opportunities, so while we were visiting, we travelled up and down the Outer Banks looking at different properties, not really intending on buying anything. But when we found this lot at the very front of The Currituck Club, the possibility of owning something in this gorgeous area suddenly had great appeal--and we bought it. At that time, our plans to build a home were firmly planted in the "Someday, Maybe, Perhaps if all the Stars Align Just Right" category.
Time passed. The Global War on Terror went into full swing and Scott's National Guard Light Infantry Battalion was activated for an 18 month mobilization and deployment. He spent a year in Afghanistan. And our second son, Sean, was born during this time.
Here's where Scott showed his lack of intelligence. Thinking Jennifer could benefit from a project to keep her mind off the deployment he suggested she have the house built while he was away. (Good theory, anyway.) But adding the stress of building a home while the husband is overseas, the wife is trying to work and raise two small boys...well you can just guess how fun that was!
In the end, though, it all paid off. As you can tell from looking at the final product, she did an amazing job. Everything you see is because of her.
We love our home and we hope, should you stay with us, that you'll come to love it too.
